Billy Elliot (15)

A young boy discovers his talent for ballet against the gritty backdrop of the miner's strike in the 1980s.

Set against the backdrop of the 1984 miners’ strike, Billy Elliot follows a young-working class boy (Jamie Bell) who discovers a passion for ballet. This passion brings him into conflict with his striking miner father, who can’t accept Billy’s desire to pursue this unconventional dream.

After premiering at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival, Billy Elliot took the world by storm. Both a commercial and critical sensation, the film won three Academy Awards, and Jamie Bell became the youngest ever winner of Best Actor in a Leading Role.
