Casablanca Beats (12A)

A rapper turned teacher helps his students find their creative voice and throw off the weight of tradition in this vibrant Moroccan hip-hop drama.

In a deprived suburb of Casablanca, Anas (real-life hip-hop artist Anas Basbousi) has been employed at an arts centre to teach rap to local youths. Though his tough-love methods and rebellious spirit prove problematic for the centre’s administrators, the youngsters soon begin to step up and evolve as performers, using their newfound confidence to speak out against an authoritarian world.

Directing with a gritty documentary style that occasionally tips into musical fantasy, director Nabil Ayouch tackles themes such as extremism, fundamentalism and identity, capturing hip-hop's potential for transformation.
