Corsage (15)

The Empress Elisabeth of Austria begins to rebel against her public image and her strict duties, in this irreverent historical drama.

Christmas, 1877. The Empress Elisabeth of Austria (Vicky Krieps) is turning 40. Renowned for her beauty, she undergoes daily privations to ensure she fits her wasp-waist corset and keeps her picture-perfect looks. But the Empress is suffocating under the ceremony of the stuffy Habsburg court. Deciding she is incapable of carrying out the decorative role that has been assigned to her, she begins to carry out acts of rebellion.

Taking liberties with history and full of anachronisms (including an evocative soundtrack by Camille), Corsage gives a refreshing take on one woman’s emancipation, with a liberating punkish attitude and an award-winning performance from Krieps.
