Hit the Road (12A)

Accompanied by a brilliant soundtrack, a family takes a twisting, turning trip across the Iranian countryside in this sharp-witted and emotional road movie.

Panah Panahi, son and collaborator of the influential and embattled director Jafar Panahi, makes a striking feature debut with this comic drama. Hit The Road takes the tradition of the Iranian road movie and adds unexpected twists and turns. It follows a family of four—two middle-aged parents and their sons, one a grumpy adult, the other an outgoing six-year-old—as they drive across the Iranian landscape.

Over the course of their trip, they grapple with fears of the unknown, bond over memories of their past and fuss over their sick dog. Unspoken tensions arise as the purpose of their journey is slowly revealed. The result is a humanist drama that offers an authentic, raw and deeply sincere observation of an Iranian family preparing to part with one of their own.
