Once shunned by society, the ogre Shrek is now living the good life with his wife Fiona and their three children. But Shrek is faced with a mid-life crisis: he wants to be a real ogre like he was before he ever met Fiona. Duped into signing a contract with the trickster Rumpelstiltskin, he finds himself in an alternate version of Far Far Away where ogres are hunted and he never met Fiona. Shrek must find a way out of the deal to restore his world and reclaim his true love.
