A computer hacker learns from mysterious rebels about the true nature of his reality and his role in the war against its controllers.
It’s 1999, and Thomas Anderson (Keanu Reeves) works in a cubicle, manning a computer and doing a little hacking on the side under the alias of Neo. Then he meets Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne), who tells him his world isn’t real—he’s a victim of the Matrix, a massive artificial intelligence system that creates the illusion of a real world while using humans’ brains and bodies for energy. But Morpheus is convinced Neo is ‘The One’ who can crack open the Matrix and bring his people freedom.
This screening is part of our ‘Breathless Sensation’ film strand, highlighting films which have pushed the creative boundaries to create wonder in audiences. The strand complements our new exhibition The Forgotten Showman. Before the film, you can join a free curator-led tour of the exhibition from 17.15.
