Stephen Frears and Hanif Kureishi’s Oscar-nominated 1985 drama follows the relationship between two young men who renovate a run-down laundrette in a London suburb.
My Beautiful Laundrette follows the fortunes of Omar (Gordon Warnecke), a young Pakistani man living in Wandsworth, London. When his rich uncle gives him the task of taking over a run-down laundrette, Omar enlists the help of his English friend Johnny (Daniel Day-Lewis), and together they transform it. Against a background of racial tension and poverty in the rough London suburb, their own relationship, portrayed with tenderness and passion, blossoms into love.
Originally shot in 16mm for Channel 4 on a low budget, My Beautiful Laundrette was met with such critical acclaim that it was distributed to cinemas and eventually became an international success. It is now considered a classic, and was ranked as one of the 50 greatest British films of the 20th century by the BFI.
