Riveting music documentary looking at the life and legacy of the lead singer of 1970s punk band X-Ray Spex.
Poly Styrene was the first woman of colour in the UK to front a successful rock band. She introduced the world to a new sound of rebellion, using her unconventional voice to sing with rare insight about identity, consumerism, postmodernism and everything she saw unfolding in late-1970s Britain.
Featuring unseen archive material and rare diary entries narrated by Oscar nominee Ruth Negga, this documentary follows Poly Styrene’s daughter Celeste as she examines her mother’s unopened artistic archive and traverses three continents to better understand Poly the icon and Poly the mother.
Rebel Women is a series of documentaries shining a light on some of the trailblazing female figures who shaped art in the modern world.
The screening on Thursday 22 February will be introduced by Alice Parsons, Director of Bradford Queer Film Festival.
