A female artist is obliged to paint a wedding portrait of a young woman, and a tender, intimate love story unfolds.

France, 1760. On an isolated island in Bretagne, Marianne is commissioned to paint the wedding portrait of Héloïse, a young woman who has just left the convent. As Héloïse is a reluctant bride-to-be, Marianne arrives under the guise of companionship, observing her subject by day and secretly painting her by night. As the two women orbit one another, intimacy and attraction grow. Héloïse's portrait soon becomes a collaborative act of and testament to their love.

Breathtaking performances from Noémie Merlant and Adèle Haenel turn the subtle act of looking into a dangerous, engrossing thrill. Winner of two prizes at the Cannes film festival, Portrait of a Lady on Fire is ‘mesmerisingly magical’ (The Guardian) and ‘simply ravishing’ (Evening Standard), confirming Céline Sciamma as one of the most exciting filmmakers working today.
