Red-Headed Woman (12A)

Jean Harlow sizzles and the dialogue crackles in this boundary-pushing comedy of sex and social climbing.

Jean Harlow, the bombshell bar none of 1930s Hollywood, rinsed her hair scarlet to play social climber Lil Andrews in this audacious, cynical and often hilarious pre-Code film from MGM. Lil is a seemingly hard woman in a tough world, but Anita Loos’ rewrite of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s screenplay gives her story the laughs it needs, drawing the audience onto her side as she seduces first her married boss (Chester Morris), then an oil tycoon (Henry Stephenson).

Pre-Code Hollywood: Rules Were Made to be Broken is a season of five restored films from before the Hays Production Code censored what could be seen on the big screen. These wild, dangerous and risqué films take audiences back to the heady cinematic world of the 1930s; when crime did pay, the bad guy got the girl in the end, and you really could get away with murder.

Tickets are discounted for titles in this season due to shorter run-times. Please be aware: these films contain adult themes and reflect the attitudes and behaviours of their time.
