Vampyr: 90th Anniversary (PG)

A cornerstone of horror cinema, Carl Theodor Dreyer’s dreamlike and uncanny masterpiece returns to the big screen in a new high-quality restoration.

The first foray into sound filmmaking by one of cinema’s pivotal artists, Vampyr remains one of the most influential and distinctive horror films ever made. The tale of an occult-obsessed student’s visit to a small French village, where he is drawn into the unsettling mystery around a stricken family’s struggle with malevolent forces, remains an unparalleled evocation of the unknown. Adapting his film from the haunting stories of Sheridan Le Fanu, Dreyer innovates ceaselessly, delivering a tour de force of supernatural unease with audacious camerawork and sound design.

This all-new 2K restoration by the Danish Film Institute, supported by the MEDIA program Creative Europe, took more than a decade to complete. Materials from several European archives have been scanned and assessed to create the highest quality and most faithful version of Vampyr possible.
