Changes to membership
If you are visiting this page, you’re probably a cinemagoer here at the National Science and Media Museum. In 2019 we will be making some changes behind the scenes, but don’t worry—it will continue to be business as usual in our three cinemas. If you are a Picturehouse member you will enjoy the full duration of your current membership, and if it expires while the changes are taking place, an interim scheme will be available offering exactly the same attractive package. You can find more information on the Picturehouse website.
About the cinema
Our IMAX theatre has an illustrious history. In 1983, it took Bradford by storm when it became the first IMAX to be opened in Europe; it’s still the biggest screen in the region. With state-of-the-art digital projection and a plush premium seating area, IMAX is the ultimate way to experience the movies—right in the heart of Bradford, UNESCO City of Film.
- The first IMAX film screened in Bradford was To Fly!; it was shown exclusively at the museum for 15 months.
- The IMAX screen is perforated with thousands of tiny holes, as the speakers are positioned behind it, and is so big it had to be lowered in through the roof.
- An IMAX 3D film is actually two films being projected in perfect synchronisation—one for each eye.
