Museum supports Year of Engineering with IMAX film and school events

The National Science and Media Museum is marking the 2018 UK Year of Engineering with education events inspired by the award-winning new 3D IMAX film Dream Big, which looks at some of the incredible ways engineers help improve lives and experiences around the globe.

Dream Big: Engineering Our World, presented by global engineering firm Bechtel, is a new 3D production celebrating the ingenuity behind engineering marvels of all sizes—from the world’s tallest buildings and underwater robots to a solar car race and smart, sustainable cities. This stunning new film shows how engineers push the limits of innovation in unexpected and amazing ways.

Picturehouse Bradford is screening the film at the museum’s IMAX cinema throughout the year as part of their regular programme—one of only two cinemas in the UK which will be showing the title. In addition there will be associated events taking place for schoolchildren and teachers.

On 7 February 2018, the museum is running Dream Big: Schools Engineering Day for up to 250 schoolchildren. The day is free to selected schools and will reveal the creativity that drives engineers, while exploring how the skills they demonstrate are at the centre of everything we see and do.

The event is aimed at KS2–3 (Years 5–7) and takes place from 10.00–14.45. It includes live science shows, Meet the Engineer sessions and a screening of Dream Big.

Teachers are invited to the free event Inspiring the Curriculum: Dream Big (8 February 2018, 16.00–18.30), a dedicated afternoon for science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) educators to meet, chat and discover new ideas.

The event includes a free screening of Dream Big and CPD workshops, plus opportunities to meet professional STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) learning providers from the museum and elsewhere, and explore the Wonderlab gallery.

‘Not only is Dream Big a fantastic new IMAX film that will appeal to our regular visitors and IMAX audience, but it is also a great opportunity for us to inspire future generations by linking our world-class collection to the work of scientists and engineers around the globe.’
