4,000 Miles From Home

This display showcased the stories and photos of Akbal Singh Kang, documenting his family and community in Bradford throughout the 1960s.

This exhibition showcased the stories and photos of Akbal Singh Kang. Arriving into the country aged 11 in 1961, he followed his father, Sarwan Singh, and documented his family and community throughout his life. His work from the 1960s archive was shown in this display.

The pictures detail a vibrant, driven and thriving community that managed to develop its journey of 4,000 miles into a journey of personal growth and success—within the region, in education and professionally. Their experience was heavily shaped by the region and its industry, shown here through glimpses of mill and working life for this wave of immigration into Bradford. The journey was to leave an indelible mark and build foundations for a new home.
