Alternate Realities

We invited you to step into another world with highlights of the Alternate Realities programme from Sheffield Doc/Fest, the UK’s premier documentary festival.

Alternate Realities encompasses virtual reality, augmented reality, artificial intelligence and immersive installations. Over 10 days, we played host to three free exhibits exploring ideas around home, identity and technology.

Belongings

What if you had to leave your home forever? What’s the one thing you couldn’t live without? The subjects of this interactive installation were faced with this very decision. Through virtual interactions with them, you will enter into an intimate conversation about the links between possessions, family, home and belonging.

Is Anna OK?

The true story of two sisters whose lives are changed overnight, told—in their own words—as a two-person VR experience. Meet twins Anna and Lauren, step into their shoes and see through their eyes. An illustrated world transforms as you explore both perspectives in a story of friendship and love.

Sensible Data/Mixed Emotions

Take a picture of yourself and a machine will draw your portrait. Send an email and an algorithm will judge your mood, age, gender and beauty. Discover how the machine sees you—and decide whether that re-informs how you see yourself.
