Cinema Memories

This display showcased photographs of cinema-going from our collection, accompanied by visitors’ memories of the silver screen in and around Bradford.

Our collection contains many fantastic images of cinemas throughout history; to bring them to life, we wanted to find out more about local people’s memories of cinema-going in Bradford.

Rachel Walker, a PhD student at the University of Sheffield (funded by White Rose College of the Arts & Humanities), worked with the museum’s Collections and Learning teams to record some of the fascinating discussions that took place as part of our Reminiscence Sessions. In this display, photographs from the Daily Herald Archive were paired with quotes from these sessions.

About Reminiscence Sessions

Reminiscence Sessions are monthly informal discussion groups, open to anyone over 55. For this session, group members were given a series of images and invited to share their memories of cinema-going in and around Bradford. We have shared some of their responses below.

A big thank you to all the museum staff who worked on this project, and to our wonderful Reminiscence Sessions attendees. Find out more about Reminiscence Sessions—for further information, you can also get in touch on 01274 202 057 or email
