Widescreen Weekend 2019

The 2019 festival was packed with ways to celebrate big-screen magic—from Robert Wise and Doris Day to a ‘superhero showdown’ between Blade and Black Panther.

Some of the highlights of Widescreen Weekend 2019 were a Robert Wise retrospective, a ‘superhero showdown’ between Blade and Black Panther, a trio of films set in Ancient Rome, and a tribute to Doris Day. As ever, we  welcomed a fantastic selection of special guests, including Yorkshire-born director Clio Barnard and former Merchant Ivory president Donald Rosenfeld.

Some festival favourites also made a return. For the second year in a row, we championed Women in Widescreen by showcasing films featuring female-powered narratives and women behind the camera. Celluloid Saturday brought our audience a brilliant selection of film on film—everything from musicals to mysteries in 3-strip and digital Cinerama, 35mm and 70mm.
