October Half Term: City Sparks

This October, we’re bringing a fantastic selection of activities to Bradford as part of our City Sparks programme.

City Sparks shines a spotlight on Bradford communities, celebrating diversity of achievement in STEM and providing a platform for underrepresented voices. We have collaborated with local community organisations to create an exciting programme of events for the whole family to enjoy, taking place at The Broadway, WomenZone and MAPA Cultural Arts Centre.

What's on

The Real McCoy: An Introduction to Black inventors

  • Exhibition: 24–31 October, 08.00–19.00
  • Family activities: 29 and 30 October, 10.00–16.00
  • The Broadway, BD1 1JR

‘The Real McCoy: An Introduction to Black inventors’ is a fascinating exhibition created by local educator Chris Peltier that showcases the hundreds of contributions made by Black scientists to technology that we use in our daily lives. This includes the areas of film, radio, computing, gaming, emergency services and much more. Many of these inventors are not widely known, often due to institutional racism and records being lost. We are proud to bring this exhibition to The Broadway for visitors and shoppers to experience.

Please note that on Tuesday 29 and Wednesday 30 October the exhibition will be accompanied by free, hands-on family activities but at all other times the experience will be self-led.

Skill and Hunar: Celebration Event

  • Tuesday 29 October, 10.00–14.00
  • WomenZone, 19–21 Hubert St, BD3 9TE

Over this summer, we have been working closely with members of the Sound and Vision Youth Forum and a group of elders at local organisation WomenZone on a brilliant intergenerational learning project.

‘Hunar’ means ‘artfulness’ in Urdu. This project has seen a rich variety of workshops, covering a multitude of crafts and skills – from iPad drawing to creating flower garlands and samosa chaat-making.

This October, join us for a celebratory event at Womenzone to mark the project's success. We would love to see you there!

Cultural Arts Day with MAPA

  • Thursday 31 October, 13.00–17.00
  • MAPA Cultural Arts Centre, 1 Coates St, Bradford BD5 7DL

Join us at MAPA Cultural Arts Centre for a celebration of community and culture with free, family-friendly arts activities and workshops. Share stories and help a new photography display at MAPA take shape, get creative with hands-on workshops, and explore objects and photographs from the museum’s handling collection.
