Winners (PG)

In a small provincial Iranian town, two nine-year olds who work hard to support their parents find an abandoned Oscar statue.

The hunt for Oscars takes on new meaning in this intelligent comedy-drama. When young Yahya finds an abandoned Oscar statuette in the dust of remote Padeh Village on the edge of the Kavir desert, he fights to keep hold of the 'doll,’ while trying to work out how it can help his struggling family. Meanwhile, his boss Yasser Khan, a cinema fan, decides to help find the gong’s rightful owner.

With this slyly meta-fictional feature, Scotland-based Hassan Nazer (Utopia) crafts an homage to the fabled—and persecuted—directors of his native Iran. A rich and intriguing film with homages to Cinema Paradiso, this is an entertaining adventure with plenty going on beneath the surface, and a curio for anyone interested in the history of cinema.
