Game Talks: Friday

The second day of Game Talks features speakers from the likes of Rocksteady, Team17 and nDreams, plus our Careers Lounge and a special Nintendo Life evening event.

Sean Gorman, Level Designer, Rocksteady

Level design: Function and form

Together with you, the audience, Sean will explore the design fundamentals needed to create meaningful and satisfying spaces in games.

The talk will uncover how the words ‘function’ and form’ are important for level designers in considering the development of a videogame level, while also covering topics such as architecture, traditional art, player psychology and portfolios.

Joshua Garrity, Senior Game Scout, Team17

Top tips for the perfect game pitch

Over the last seven years, Josh has seen hundreds of pitches for videogame projects in his role as Game Scout at publishers Sold Out and now Team17. Over that time, he has observed not only what makes for a compelling game pitch, but also what signs to look for in a developer that speak to a positive and harmonious working relationship.

If you’re looking to start pitching to publishing partners with an exciting new project, this advice will be vital for your success.

Bex Betton, Women in Games Ambassador

Should I engage in work experience and unpaid opportunities in the games industry?

Many games industry professionals decide to participate in unpaid work experience or industry opportunities at the start of their career—but is this essential to building a name for yourself in games? This talk will explore unpaid opportunities and whether they are right for you, as well as looking at how to find them and helping you to evaluate your prospects and manage financial stability and fair treatment throughout.

Bex is Arts Fundraising and Development Support Officer for the NHS in Cardiff, where she has recently introduced games into the Arts for Health and Wellbeing Programme at Cardiff & Vale Health Charity. Her background is in funding, production and writing for the games, theatre and television. Bex is also the first Women in Games Ambassador in Wales and works to support under-represented genders making their first steps into the games industry.

Nele Steenput, Senior Character Artist, nDreams

Best practices in character art for VR

Nele is a senior character artist with over six years’ experience in the games industry. She was head of art at Cooperative Innovations, specialising in character art and design and leading the art team on titles such as Spaceteam VR. She has experience working on a range of styles and aesthetics for different game genres.

Outside work, she has been involved with BAFTA Crew and taking part in initiatives such as EGX Career Fair, Academy, Grad in Games and plenty of others doing portfolio reviews and mentoring.
